Safety & Risk Management Seminar (an English Seminar)
Supported by
Industrial Centre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Date, Time & Venue
Tuesday, 20 November 2007; 7:00pm – 8:30pm; Rm Y301, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Programme Highlights
How can companies manage minor and major risks when going global?
More Hong Kong enterprises are making forays overseas, focusing on expanding their global operations as they see increasing opportunities abroad. While going global, Hong Kong companies must anticipate and manage risks that are inherent in having a large workforce around the world. They must protect their most valuable asset — senior managers who are sent overseas with their families, as well as local employees.
Topics covered:
‧ Overseas medical and safety risks an individual faces (e.g. minor incident such as a traffic accident)
‧ Worldwide hot spots and key concerns (e.g. recent Myanmar civil unrest)
‧ Implementing a cross border Business Continuity Plan from your regional/worldwide Headquarters
Speaker
Tony RIDLEY, Regional Security Director, Asia Pacific, International SOS
Dr. Ahmed FAHMY, Medical Director, Hong Kong, International SOS

Seminar on Save Your Time and Trouble in Project Management Through Good Practices in Purchasing and Subletting
For members' information only, not an HKARMS organised event
Organized by
Date, Time & Venue
5 October 2007 (Fri); 6:30pm - 8:00pm; HKIE
Programme Highlights
Commercial subjects like purchasing and subletting seem always to have been
overlooked in the engineering training as it is considered that these are
responsibilities of other professions. Many day-to-day problems in project
management that project managers and engineers have to handle stem from poor
purchasing and subletting, such as arguments on the demarcation of scope due
to unclear terms, claims for additional items by suppliers/subcontractors,
items not delivered on time causing project overrun. It is much better to
avoid problems than to have resolved them. In order to assist you to avoid
or at least to minimise these particular problems, the speaker will go
through some good practices in purchasing and subletting that are too
important not to know.
Speaker
Ir John W O Chan, a qualified quantity surveyor.
Registration & enquiries
This seminar is free of charge and prior registration is required. The
number of participants is limited to 60 and applications will be accepted on
a first-come-first-served basis (MC Division members will be given a higher
priority). Only on-line registration via the Division's website at

Thursday, 27 September 2007, 7:00pm – 8:30pm |
Programme Highlights
It is prudent for corporations to have a Business Continuity Plan in place to reduce the risks and impact of an influenza pandemic or other catastrophic medical emergencies. In this seminar, Dr. Wong will introduce the nature and symptoms of Seasonal Influenza & Bird Flu, and explain why Bird Flu has the potential to be the next Pandemic. He will explain some similar but confusing words such as: Antibiotics and Antivirals / Endemic, Epidemic and Pandemic. Dr. Wong will discuss the goals of a Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Plan and associated activities; as well as the implementation of antiviral stockpiling at corporate level, which is an important tool for the corporations’ survival during a Flu pandemic. Quoting from a HKU publication, he will explain how household-based interventions and the targeted use of antivirals may reduce the impact of a Flu Pandemic.
Speaker
Dr. Nelson Wong, LRCP, MRCS; MB BS (London); MRCP (UK); Fellow of Life Management Institute, is in charge of Corporate Medical Scheme Services at Dr. Vio & Partners, a group practice celebrating its 60th Anniversary in Hong Kong. He is a co-founder of AMPG – the original virtual medical network which he sold in 1999. He is the author of the chapter on Managed Care in the H.K.U. position book on Hong Kong’s Health System and had formerly been a Medical Consultant or Chief Medical Officer of Manulife, HSBC Life, Swiss Re and Blue Cross etc. He is also an advisor to the Health Care Committee of The Business and Professionals Federation of Hong Kong. In the Seminar, the Speaker will describe a risk-based approach to verify the safety acceptance of an emergency braking system of a modern light rail vehicle. Using an integrated event tree/fault tree risk model, all perceivable failure scenarios associated with the emergency braking system were postulated, and their consequence and frequency of occurrence were individually quantified. The total risk associated with the emergency braking system was assessed.

A Risk-Based Framework to Prioritise Safety Improvement Alternatives
Download: A Risk-Based Framework to Prioritise Safety Improvement Alternatives
Organized by
Date, Time & Venue
Friday, 13 April 2007, 7 pm to 8:15 pm, immediately following the SSC AGM
Seminar Room, HKIE Headquarters, 9/F Island Beverly, No. 1 Great George Street,
Causeway Bay, Hong Kong
Programme Highlights
With limited funding, decision-makers often face the dilemma of selecting an optimal decision from a set of sound alternatives. They are faced with choosing the most cost/risk-effective safety improvement options from a large list of alternatives with funding limitations. They must also consider several implementation options along with the potential impact to the community.
The Speaker presents a risk-based decision technique that combines the advantages of two decision making theories to prioritize decision alternatives based on a set of risk-based evaluation criteria and a formal cost/risk/benefit analysis structure. To further aid the decision-maker, this risk-based prioritization process can be automated into a decision analysis software. It has been found to be an effective decision-making tool to aid in the prioritization of over 150 decision alternatives in a real commercial case where multiple attributes were involved.

Ir Dr. Vincent Ho, Immediate Past Chairman, SSC

Programme Highlights
As safety management aims to safeguard the well being of people, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) aims to enhance the sustainability of organizations. ERM is a process used in the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling of risks related to business activities at the enterprise level. By identifying and proactively treating enterprise risks, organizations minimize the risk exposure on their capitals, resources, investment and earnings, as well as external effects on society, markets or the environment.
ERM is a new and evolving discipline using the risk methodologies commonly found in safety and financial risk management but extended to address the full spectrum of business activities including the consideration of risks associated with financial, strategic, operational, political, image, and other factors affecting the sustainability of an organization. The Seminar aims to introduce the concept and process of ERM to engineers and safety practitioners, as well as sharing the experience and challenges amongst ERM specialists in today's major organizations. Sponsored by PSDAS (ref. 2005-2-12), the Seminar is organised by HKARMS in collaboration with HKIE-SSC, HKIE-MC, HKIE-NE, and IOSH (Hong Kong).
